Common Questions

Asphalt Paving & New Construction FAQ

How long does a new asphalt parking lot take to install?

It depends on square footage, whether the existing surface has to be removed, and how much base and drainage correction is required. A straightforward residential driveway is often a single day. A multi-acre commercial lot with phased access is measured in staged sections. WPC provides the sequence in writing before mobilizing so the property owner knows exactly which areas are unavailable and when.

What is underneath a properly built asphalt surface?

A compacted subgrade, an aggregate base of specified depth and gradation, and then the asphalt itself placed in one or more lifts and compacted while hot. The base does the structural work; the asphalt is the wearing surface that keeps water out of it. Nearly every premature pavement failure originates in an inadequate or saturated base rather than in the asphalt.

Do you remove the old pavement or pave over it?

Both are legitimate approaches and the right one depends on the base. If the existing base is sound and the grades work, an overlay over a properly prepared surface is the economical choice. If the base has failed, or if adding thickness would create clearance or drainage problems at doors, curbs and drainage structures, removal and replacement is the correct answer. WPC evaluates this before quoting rather than defaulting to whichever is easier.

Do you provide free estimates?
