Grading, Excavation & Drainage Correction

Most asphalt failures begin below the surface. WPC performs the grading, excavation, base preparation and drainage correction that determines whether new pavement lasts — including subgrade preparation, aggregate base placement and compaction, positive-drainage grading, and correction of the low areas and structures where water collects.

What This Service Covers

  • Site grading and subgrade preparation
  • Excavation and removal of failed material
  • Aggregate base placement and compaction
  • Positive drainage grading and cross-slope correction
  • Low-spot and birdbath elimination
  • Swale shaping and shoulder restoration
  • Drainage structure tie-ins and elevation correction
  • Pavement reclamation of existing material where suitable
Handling grading and paving under one scope removes the coordination gap that appears when a grading contractor and a paving contractor each assume the other owns the drainage result.

Common Questions

Grading, Excavation & Drainage FAQ

Water stands on our lot after every rain. What causes it and can it be fixed?

Standing water almost always means the surface lacks the pitch to move water to a drainage point, or a section has settled because the base beneath it failed. Both are fixable: the settled area is removed to full depth, the base is corrected and compacted, and the section is rebuilt to a grade that drains. Correcting drainage before any resurfacing is essential, because water sitting on a new surface will fail it early.

What is pavement reclamation?

Reclamation pulverizes the existing asphalt and blends it with the underlying base to create a new stabilized base layer for the pavement placed on top. Where site conditions suit it, it reduces hauling and disposal and reuses material already on site — one of the reasons WPC describes its approach as a green, sustainable solution for pavement needs.

Do you handle drainage structures, or only the pavement?

Grading, excavation and drainage correction around and into structures are part of the paving scope. Where a project requires new storm structures or utility work beyond pavement drainage, that scope is identified in the estimate rather than assumed [WPC to confirm scope boundaries].

How much slope does a parking lot need to drain?

Enough to move water positively to a collection point without creating a surface that is uncomfortable to walk or park on. The specific figure is a design decision based on the site, the drainage structures available and the surrounding grades. What matters is that the pitch is deliberate and continuous — the failures come from flat spots and reversals, not from marginal slope.
